Sometimes it is hard to know what to buy for people. Especially if those people happen to live on a farm. Most homestead families live life a little (or maybe a lot) differently than the rest of the population.
Knowing what to buy for adults and farm kids can be a kind of difficult.
I put together a gift guide for the adult homesteaders but what about all those farm kids. Well, if anyone knows what a farm kid wants, it’s me. I’m not saying I’m some kind of expert but I do have a lot of kids (like 8 of them) around here.
We have kids ranging in age from small child to older teenager so there is a wide array of items they like. Sure, farm kids are normal (for the most part) kids but there are a few items that may not fit the bill of your standard American kid.
We like to get some fun items for our kids and some practical items. Some of these practical items may not seem fun to most people but my farm kids love getting stuff like this.
Farm Kids Gift Guide
Fun Stuff
Model Horses-
My kids love playing with their toy horses. I can’t blame them, I did too when I was a kid. In fact, most of the ones they have were mine (like eons ago).
Farmy Stationary-
My girls love stationary, pens, pencils, and anything artsy or crafty with farm animals on them. Horses are their favorite.
Craft Kits-
On a homestead, we like to learn practical skills to make things for ourselves and others. Craft kits are great for the kids to learn these fun things.
Toy Indian/Cowboy/Sherriff Stuff-
Little boys (and girls) enjoy playing Cowboys and Indians. How politically incorrect!
Legos-
Most kids love playing legos and my kids definitely do too. This is a great option because it’s fun and they also learn all kind of good things from them. The only con- stepping on them.
Lincoln Logs-
What farm kid doesn’t like to build a sweet log cabin with their Lincoln logs?
Toy Trucks and Tractors-
Kids like to mimic their parents. They see mom and dad using cool equipment and they want to too.
Puzzles-
My kids love to build puzzles. They especially enjoy farm themed puzzles. This is actually a gift for the whole family as we love to build them together!
Practical Items
Gloves-
How boring does this sound? Farm kids need gloves and go through multiple pairs a year between wearing them out or losing them (or feeding them to the dog). The best part is, you can get them in all kinds of colors or cute prints.
Pocket Knife-
Like, a legit knife, you say?!?!? Age appropriate of course, don’t go giving a knife to a 6 year old! My older kids are responsible enough to have a knife and on a farm, you always need a knife handy.
Farm Boots-
Are one of those wear out or out grow fast items. All farm kids need good work boots and mud boots.
Farm Clothes-
See above- Farm kids can flat wear some clothes out. Forget outgrowing them, they’re full of stains and holes way before that!
Hats-
Kids love to wear hats. You can get all kinds of cute farm, hats or cowboy hats and you’ll have some happy farm kids.
I’m sure if you ask the farm kids in your life, you could add even more to this list but this should get you started. If you buy some fun items and throw in a few practical, your farm kid’s parents will thank you. 😉
More great posts:
Just coming on here to let you know that I was searching for a gift for my niece and nephew. But, they’re Native American farmers so I don’t think getting them culturally inappropriate and historically inaccurate “cowboy and Indian” toy sets is the best idea.
Sincerely,
A Native American Aunty
My children and I are also Native American farmers. We have all enjoyed playing with these make believe toys. 🙂
