To say that I was excited to review “Beyond Basics with Natural Yeast” by Melissa Richardson would be an understatement. I have been baking with my very own natural yeast (sourdough) for a couple of months now. I love how easy to understand and follow this book is. Sometimes I just need things to be put into simple terms. When it comes to sourdough baking some books make you feel like you have to be some artisan baker to succeed. Not this book, anyone really can bake well with sourdough and this book teaches you how.
Cooking with natural yeast is so much healthier than commercial yeast. Often times people who have problems with gluten or digesting wheat can tolerate properly fermented sourdough. This is a “life saver” for many people who have had to give up bread in their diet. If you have sensitivities in your diet you should definitely give natural yeast a try.
We made “Dad’s Sourdough Pancakes” from page 62. Yummy! I can hardly wait to try out some (most of) the other recipes in the book. They seems so much less daunting than other cookbooks that I have tried to follow. The format of the recipes is so easy to use. When baking with sourdough (as with cooking almost any real food) there is always going to be some ahead of time preparation. This book lays out the steps in a manner that makes it much less overwhelming. This book is great for the beginner or for the seasoned baker.
I am so happy to have this book in my collection. I believe you will find it to be an excellent asset to yours as well.
